Helena Hauck Scarmuzza

Helena Marie (Hauck) Scarmuzza, of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away on March 8, 2024, at the age of 80, due to complications from Alzheimer's. She was born on September 3, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Helena was a wonderful homemaker and mother, finding spiritual fulfillment in nurturing her family. Her dedication to motherhood extended beyond her immediate family, as she selflessly consoled, guided, and cared for many children and youth in her extended family, earning her the title of a second mother to many. Her home was always filled with warmth and love, especially during family gatherings on holidays, which she absolutely loved hosting.
In her professional life, Helena worked in the check cashing department at Schwegmann Bros. Grocery stores, where she formed many lifelong friendships, and her future husband Joseph worked alongside her in a different department. But her true calling was as a devoted homemaker and mother, and she was also well-known for her delicious home cooked meals.
Helena will be deeply missed by her husband of 62 years, Joseph A. Scarmuzza, her son Keith A. Scarmuzza, daughter-in-law Supreeya Scarmuzza, grandsons Joseph P. Scarmuzza and Matthew P. Scarmuzza, her brother Frank Porrazzo, sisters-in-law Debbie Tortorich and Lena Stann, brother-in-law Vincent Tortorich, Sr., and many close nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Marie Louise Hook, father Walter Hauck, and stepfather Frank Porrazzo.
In memory of Helena, family and friends are invited to attend a Visitation at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2023, at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd, New Orleans. Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. to honor her life and legacy, led by priest from St. Christopher Catholic Church, where she worshipped. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery Mausoleum.
